about

I first met the director of Snatchers, John Kingman, in August 2018. We were supposed to speak for 10 minutes and ended up talking for over an hour. At the end of that hour I knew I had to score Snatchers, and luckily I was successful in convincing him! Our shared love of 80’s movies, synthwave, and especially John Carpenter inspired not only John’s vision for the film, but my vision for the music. It was, and is, a dream project.

The wonderful synth sounds of the 80’s permeate everything I wrote for Snatchers, from Vangelis’ ethereal strings in Bladerunner to John Carpenter’s pulsing rhythms in Escape from New York. Synthwave is undergoing a significant revival, and I’m thrilled to introduce some of these sounds to a new audience.

Although the musical world of Snatchers is firmly rooted in synthwave, I open the film with a grand orchestral overture more reminiscent of the golden age of film. Miklós Rózsa’s Oscar winning score for the Hitchcock thriller Spellbound is a major inspiration for the orchestral cues in Snatchers. His gorgeously haunting score features a theremin alongside a traditional orchestra – a completely unheard-of concept in the 1940’s. An ondes martenot (a close relative of the theremin) is the first thing heard in Snatchers, and is a tribute to Rózsa’s Spellbound score.

I hope you enjoy listening to this album as much as I enjoyed creating it!
